How to Work with the Beavers

Need Supplies?

 While there are specific ways to neutralize Beavers without harming them, we need to be proactive.   Reach out to us at info@casslakesidevillage.com; we do have volunteers and a small budget to help.   Trees down in the canal let us know.

Who We Are

 Here are 5 facts about beavers:

  1. Beavers are the largest rodent in North America.
  2. Beavers have distinctive orange-colored teeth.
  3. Beavers build dams and lodges to modify their environment.
  4. Beavers are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes.
  5. Beavers are know for slapping their tails in the water.

How to Manage the Beavers

 

  • Exclusion:
    • Fencing: Constructing sturdy wire mesh or electric fences around trees, structures, or areas can prevent beavers from accessing them. 
    • Barriers: Installing barriers around culverts, drains, and other sensitive structures can help prevent beavers from accessing or damming them. 
  • Modification:
    • Dam Removal: Removing or modifying beaver dams, especially when causing flooding or other problems, can help manage water levels. 
    • Flow Control Devices: These devices can help manage water levels in beaver ponds while allowing beavers to remain in the area. 
  • Deterrents and Repellents:
    • Paint and Sand: Painting tree trunks or structures with a mixture of paint and sand can deter beavers from chewing due to the gritty texture. 
    • Other Deterrents: Various repellents, including scents and sounds, can also be used to discourage beavers from entering or staying in certain areas. 
  • Trapping and Removal:
    • Trapping: When done legally and responsibly, trapping can be an effective way to remove beavers from problem areas. 
    • Professional Help: Consulting a licensed wildlife control professional for trapping and removal services ensures the process is handled safely and effectively. 

Shooting geese in your yard, specifically in Michigan, is generally not permitted.
